Relationship Goals - What's the Rush?
Objective - Students will learn that God cares greatly about
their dating life and will be challenged to take the time to ask wise questions
before making any decisions about dating.
Key Scripture - Proverbs 2:10-11 When wisdom enters your
heart, and knowledge is pleasant to your soul, discretion will preserve you;
understanding will keep you.
Summary - Today’s
lesson was the third of a four-part series on relationships. The title of the
series is Relationship Goals: Navigating with Wisdom. In this lesson, students
were challenged to use God’s wisdom specifically in the realm of dating
relationships.
While the Bible never uses the word “dating,” it doesn’t
mean that the Bible is silent when it comes to principles that can be applied
to dating. God’s Word is sufficient for all things in life (2 Peter 1:3).
While we learned
several principles from the Word of God on the topic of dating, we began by
letting the students know two biblical principles that must be applied to
dating prior to any of the others. We made it clear that if dating would cause
them to go against either of these principles, they should not be dating. Those
two principles were:
Children are to obey and honor their parents. (Ephesians
6:1-2)
We are not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers. (2
Corinthians 6:14-16)
But, for those who find themselves in a place in life where
they can date within the guidelines of these two principles, we taught them how
to ask wise questions about themselves and about the person they are interested
in dating. Wisdom helps us make confident decisions in all aspects of our
lives, including dating relationships. “When wisdom enters your heart, and
knowledge is pleasant to your soul, discretion will preserve you; understanding
will keep you” (Proverbs 2:10-11).
This week, if appropriate, discuss with your student the
motivations behind dating relationships. Discuss the standards to which you
plan to hold them in their relationships. Set healthy boundaries on time spent
with others of the opposite sex while also encouraging healthy friendships with
believers of both genders.
