Speed Traps - Parent Connection

 Objective

Students will learn that God corrects those He loves, and they will be challenged to find joy during times of chastening.

Key Scripture

Hebrews 12:5-6

And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: “My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; for whom the Lord loves He chastens, and scourges every son whom He receives.”

Key Thought

Discipline is never easy, but it’s always good.

Lesson Summary

Today’s lesson was the fourth lesson of a four-part series called, Road Trip – Destination: Holiness. In this series, we have been taking a road trip of sorts that is guided by the Word of God. We have been studying the doctrine of sanctification. “Sanctification” is simply “the work of the Holy Spirit to make believers more like the Lord Jesus Christ.” Since our intended destination is holiness, this road trip will not end when the lessons are finished, but it will help the students get on the right path.

In the first lesson, we learned that we should be paying attention to the warning signs that God gives us in Scripture. In the second lesson, we learned that if we begin to run in the wrong direction, then we need to repent to make a U-turn. In the third lesson, we reminded ourselves not to pick up any hitchhikers (sin) along the way. This final lesson in the series specifically talked about the discipline that can come as a result of sin and how to learn and grow as a result of that discipline.

God’s chastening (His disciplining and training) is for the purpose of helping His children become more holy. He uses discipline to help us stay on the path of holiness and to experience the peaceable fruit of righteousness.

When we are going through God’s chastening, we should find joy in it because it is working for our good. If we are disciplined by God, we know that we are truly one of His children and that He loves us enough not to leave us the way we are.
