Prayer 101

Objective: Students will see the importance of prayer in their daily lives and will be challenged to develop a proper perspective of prayer.

Key Scripture: Matthew 6:9-13

Key Thought: Personal prayer leads to praise and peace.

Lesson Summary: This lesson was the third lesson in a four-part series called “101: Back to Basics.” Tonight, we studied the topic of prayer. This lesson helped your teen understand the model prayer from Matthew 6 and that praise and peace can come through prayer.

Your teen was encouraged to develop a proper perspective of prayer beginning with a proper perspective of God the Father. Students were encouraged to bring their needs, worries, and anxieties to God in prayer and were challenged to spend some time throughout the day praising, thanking, and bringing their requests to God. The takeaway of the lesson was not “pray more,” but to develop a proper perspective of prayer.

It may be helpful to sit down with your teen and ask if you can pray with them about some things that may be on their heart—anxieties, worries, or anything else. Also, try making a habit of stopping and thanking God throughout the day for His many blessings. Allow your teen to see you taking your anxieties to God in prayer. If prayer has become nothing but a ritual at your dinner table, try mixing it up by making specific requests to God, or intentionally praising Him during your prayer.
