 Looking for Foundations

Objective: Students will learn that the Christian worldview provides the foundations for discovering truth and will be challenged to exercise biblical faith.

Key Scripture: Colossians 1:16-17

Key Thought: Is that the whole story?

Lesson Summary: Tonight’s lesson was the first in a four-part series called “What? A Conversation About Worldviews, Creation, Evolution, Darwin, Consequences, Facts, Faith, Science, Semantics, Finches, Fossils, Microscopes, and Mousetraps.” This week, your student learned about the importance of a worldview. Our worldview is like a pair of glasses we use to view the world. It will determine how things appear, which is why it is critical to have the right worldview! This week we used the question, “Is that the whole story?” to question the worldview of Darwinian Evolution. We debunked the false notion that “Christianity is about blind faith and science is about facts.” Students learned that both Christianity and Darwinian evolution require faith. The question is what kind of faith?

Students learned that the Christian worldview provides foundations to help us discover truth and have confident faith, while the worldview of evolution cannot even account for science.

  1. Science does not explain everything. We cannot use the Scientific Method to learn about the past. We have to have a certain measure of faith about beginnings.
  2. Science must assume order in the universe. If Darwinian evolution is true, there should be no order; but science has to assume that the world is orderly in order to test and experiment.
  3. Science must assume that our minds are trustworthy. If Darwinian evolution is true, there is no reason for us to trust our minds; in which case, there is no reason to trust the results of science.

Students were challenged to have a biblical faith that is based on evidence and the truth of God’s revelation, rather than a faith that is blind and unthinking.

Consider what kind of faith you hold to. Do you have good reasons for your beliefs? What would you say to someone who said that Darwinian evolution explains everything? Take some time this week to explore this topic with your student.
