Elevate Sunday - Parent Connection - 11.20.2019

Objective: Students will realize that God is always with them and choose to run from sinful temptations.

Key Scripture: 1 Corinthians 10:13

Key Thought: Do what’s right in God’s sight.

Lesson Summary: Tonight, we continued our study in the Book of Genesis about the life of Joseph. We are in the second part of a four-part series called: “The Dreamer: Joseph’s Life of Faith.” This week we discussed the faith that it takes to flee temptation.

Using Genesis 39, we discovered a five-point strategy that Joseph used to flee temptation.

  1. Joseph counted the cost (Genesis 39:8-9a)
  2. Joseph remembered the truth about sin (Genesis 39:9b)
  3. Joseph pre-decided his response (Genesis 39:9)
  4. Joseph put boundaries in his life (Genesis 39:10)
  5. Joseph ran (Genesis 39:12)

We challenged your student to have a strategy for avoiding temptation. In that strategy, however, we reminded them that the best way to avoid temptation is to consistently remember the presence of God. Choosing to remember that God is always with you, especially in the middle of a temptation, can greatly help your fight against temptation. We specifically asked your student to choose one way in which he/she will actively avoid temptation. Maybe they will make a point to avoid using the internet in a private setting. Perhaps he/she will ask a small group leader to hold him/her accountable for their speech or how they talk about others. Ask your student how you can help in their daily fight against temptation.
