Guaranteed - A Sure Support

Objective - Students will learn that Jesus stands up for them when they sin and will trust Him as their Advocate.

Key Scripture - 1 John 2:1-2 - My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.

Key Thought - Jesus is there for you.

Lesson Summary

Today’s lesson was the second of a four-week series called Guaranteed. This series is a book study of the New Testament Book of 1 John. The series is called Guaranteed because the Author of 1 John reminds us of several guarantees that we have from God.

The first thing your student learned today was that Jesus is an Advocate. This means that when Christians sin, Jesus pleads our case before God the Father. Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead so the payment for sin would be paid. By believing in Jesus as Savior, we gain the righteousness of Jesus. Even though we are guilty of sin, we stand righteous before God because of what Jesus did. Jesus is our Advocate.

But your student also learned that Jesus is the Propitiation for sin. “Propitiation” is a big term that simply means that Jesus was the only One Who could satisfy the wrath of God against sin. Since Jesus never sinned, He was the satisfactory atonement for sin. This was something we could have never done for ourselves because we are sinners.

Jesus provided the only satisfactory payment for sin, offers us the chance to have our sin forgiven, and then stands before God advocating for those who trust in Him for Salvation. Jesus is there for us; He is a sure support!

Your student should have been given a card with the words of 1 John 2:1-2 printed on it. As a way to keep the truths about Jesus in their minds, after dinner one night this week, read 1 John 2:1-2 with your student and ask them what the words “advocate” and “propitiation” mean. Then discuss why it matters that Jesus is both of these things for us. You could also ask your student if they are having a difficult time trusting in God about anything right now. Offer to pray specifically for their needs. Come up with a creative way to help them remember that Jesus is an Advocate and the Propitiation for the sin of the world.
