Parent Connection - 9.12.21

 Grow on Purpose

Objective: Students will understand how biblical disciplines grow and deepen their Christian faith and will be challenged to apply these disciplines through Word of Life Creative Discipleship.

Key Scripture: Colossians 2:6-7 - As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.

Key Thought: Grow on purpose.

Lesson Summary:

This week’s lesson was the third in a four-part series called “Roots: Growing Your Faith.” Tonight’s lesson focused on personal, spiritual growth. The students were encouraged to develop a plan for spiritual growth and to use the Creative Discipleship Program to help with that plan.

The Creative Discipleship Program highlights eight different areas that should be part of the spiritual growth plan of every follower of Jesus. They are: Attendance to a local church (Hebrews 10:24-25), Quiet Time (1 Peter 2:2-3), Scripture Memory (Psalm 119:11), Service to Others (Mark 10:45), Reading Books (Philippians 4:8), Bringing Friends (John 1:41-42a), Gospel Conversations (Acts 1:8), and Discipleship (using a plan called “Mobilize”) (Matthew 28:18-20). Be sure to connect with your youth leaders to learn how your student could use this program to begin developing a plan for spiritual strength.

For every student that completes this program by the end of May, they earn the following rewards:

  • One free week of camp at a Word of Life (New York or Florida).
  • One free ticket to a Word of Life Reverb event.
  • A $500 scholarship to the Word of Life Bible Institute (New York, Florida or Ontario* Campus) and other Christian colleges.

Each student was challenged to add at least three of these disciplines to their life this week. We called it The Three Discipline Challenge. Talk with your student about their spiritual growth. Pray for your student and let them know you are praying for them. Ask if they took the Three Discipline Challenge and encourage them to follow through this week. Be bold enough to share where you are in your spiritual disciplines, both your successes and failures. Commit with your student to grow on purpose spiritually. God wants us all to grow closer to Him; a growing parent is a great example for your student to follow.
